Spider Veins in Dallas, TX
Vanguard Vascular & Vein treats spider veins for the residents of Garland, Rowlett, and the Greater Dallas area.
Spider veins are tiny, web-like veins that appear red, blue, or purple just under the surface of your skin. The most common area to develop spider veins is your legs, although spider veins may form on your face, hands, and other areas of your body.
What Causes Spider Veins?
Spider veins form when the tiny veins below your skin fill up with blood and swell. The excess blood typically results from venous reflux. Venous reflux is a condition in which the valves inside your veins do not close properly, allowing your blood to flow backward and pool in lower veins. As the blood pools, the vein walls weaken and expand. The result is visible spider veins.
Am I at Risk for Spider Veins?
The most common risks associated with spider veins are the following:
- Family medical history
- Professions that require long periods of standing
- Hormonal changes that result from pregnancy, puberty, and menopause
- Birth control medications
- Hormonal replace therapy
- History of blood clots
- Other medical conditions, such as tumors and constipation
- Tight fitting garments, such as girdles
- Trauma, injury to your skin, vein surgery, sun exposure
How Can I Prevent Spider Veins?
While some of the risk factors for spider veins cannot be avoided, such as family medical history, there are some steps that you can take to reduce your likelihood of developing spider veins. You should avoid wearing tight fitting clothing, such as girdles and other undergarments. If you work in a profession that requires you to stand, take frequent breaks and elevate your legs. Proper exercise and weight control can help improve your circulation and may reduce your chances of developing spider veins.
